BATTLE ENDS:

Classmate Sinforoso ‘Paddy’ Padilla gives up in his long battle against pancreatic cancer

R. I. P.: Dr. Sinforoso S. Padilla Jr.Monday, January 14, 2019

It is with deep sorrow we report that classmate Sinforoso ‘Paddy’ S. Padilla Jr. had given up in his long fight against pancreatic cancer.

Paddy had been reporting via email (see below) on his battle against the deadly disease. After a period of not hearing from Paddy, we learned from a Facebook post by his wife, Dorothy, that he passed away peacefully yesterday.

Paddy’s nephew, Michael Pliska, writes nostalgically about Paddy:

“After a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, my uncle, Sinforoso Padilla Jr. MD (known as Paddy but I always called him Uncle Junior), passed away this morning. Please keep his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers. I'll always fondly remember visiting him when I was young, as we took trips to the beaches of Lake Michigan or hung out at his medical practice. Rest in Peace Uncle Junior.”

Rest in peace, Paddy!

Knowing what Paddy has been valiantly fighting this proximate period including the rigors of the treatment itself, I can offer only my utmost admiration for his indomitable courage, patience and endurance! We go back a long time to the days at the original UP High at Padre Faura!!

May he Rest In Peace thru eternity!

BATTLING CANCER:

Classmate Sinforoso ‘Paddy’ Padilla writes an update on his battle against pancreatic cancer

Classmate Walter Butler passes on the following email message from classmate Sinforoso “Paddy” Padilla who has been battling a case of pancreatic cancer (read Paddy’s First Message).

Date: November 7, 2018 at 3:36 PM

From: Paddy and Dot Padilla <dotpaddy@gmail.com>

Subject: Paddy Update

Hi! Everybody,

Sinforoso S. PadillaI am not writing this to obtain pity or sympathy but only for your update info. God and I know and thank you for all the sympathy we get from you my family and friends thru your prayers.  Last Thursday, Dot, Steve, and Stewart (and I presume Spencer and Scott by teleconference were in it) had a meeting and a talk with Dr. Eric Batts, M.D., my oncologist and Director of the Holland Cancer & Hematology Center and did not actually say this was my end but implied that as far as pancreatic cancer treatment this was as far as he could go. Surgery and radiation are out of the question, chemotherapy had undergone about 3 courses, and each time I had what he considered adverse reactions (severe weakness almost to the point of loss of consciousness, anorexia, etc.) which ended up in my being here in a care facility that any further chemotherapy might be fatal. I also told him that somebody suggested immunotherapy (where they take cancer cells and produce a serum of antibodies specific for those cancer cells and administer the serum to kill the cancer). Dr. Batts said he was not aware of any nearby facility that does research or activity regarding immunotherapy for pancreatic cancer. For those of other cancers, those facilities require a very high standard for any patient being referred to them, e.g., their life expectancy should exceed three months, and since my age and other medical problems, I may not qualify in the first place. When asked what of about now was my expected life expectancy?, he said, about six months (if I am lucky, maybe a year according to some textbooks). As far I recall, only those with pancreatic cancer that underwent immunotherapy were those who had cancer cells obtained from undergoing pancreatectomy. Any input or info from you about immunotherapy for pancreatic cancer, and where and what facility it is done will be appreciated.
